700e in use for dike reinforcement

Vibrating of sheet piles in Alphen a/d Rijn with zero emission

Ploegam is carrying out a quay improvement in Alphen aan den Rijn on behalf of the Rijnland Water Board. The dikes here will be raised, reinforced and fitted with sheet piles over a length of approximately 5.5 kilometers. This sheet pile wall ensures that local residents and residents of the area behind it will keep their feet dry for the next 100 years.

Electric Hydraulic Power Unit (EHPU) from Dieseko Group

When placing the sheet pile walls, a PVE 15 VM Variable Moment Vibratory Hammer and an Electric Hydraulic Power Unit (EHPU) from Dieseko Group are used. Marion van den Akker, Area Manager at Dieseko Group: “This Electric Hydraulic Power Unit is equipped with 430 kWh electric motors and can therefore deliver more than 700 liters per minute of oil flow. The PVE 15VM Vibratory Hammer is equipped with a so-called Variable Moment. This ensures that annoying vibrations when starting and stopping the vibrating hammer are prevented.”

Hybrid setup
A challenging question that Ploegam asked Bredenoord: An emission-free power supply for an electric driven vibratory hammer that requires an enormous amount of power, which is also located on the water and where no grid connection is available, and which is moved over several kilometers during the project.

“During measuring and testing, we saw that the Electric Hydraulic Power Unit produces high peaks, but that the average power consumed in this project is relatively low. That is why we have opted for a hybrid setup here: a biogas-driven generator in combination with a Battery Box.” – Zef Jansen, Commercial Manager Projects at Bredenoord.

The Battery Box supplies the required energy for the work and absorbs the high inrush currents from Ploegam and the Dieseko unit. The biogas generator only starts when the Battery Box needs to be recharged. This ensures that the biogas is used as efficiently as possible. This hybrid solution of the biogas generator and a Battery Box provides reliable power on location without a grid connection, as is the case here. And thanks to the Battery Box, there is no need for a huge generator that is then poorly used. Because on average, much less energy is consumed in this project.

A worldwide first for biogas on water
Jelmer Kalff, CCO at Powercrumbs, is proud that this is the first time that biogas has been used on water. “The Powercrumbs box is filled with more than 1,000m3 of biogas, which yields more than 2,000 kWh of energy. This energy ensures that all machines on the pontoon can run. This new energy chain has comparable CO2 emissions as wind energy from the grid.”

Combining innovative power
Johan Peters, work planner at Ploegam: “The great thing is that we show here that innovation works by joining the forces of Ploegam, Dieseko, Bredenoord and Powercrumbs. It is the next step towards a 100% zero emission working method. A great project to carry out together with our partners.”
