Pertamina Cilacaps’ new quay wall

A PVE Variable Moment Vibratory Hammer successfully completed Pertamina Cilacap's new quay wall. The decades-old quay wall at Pertamina Cilacap required refurbishment; the wall was damaged and had partly collapsed in some places. The new wall of 460 steel sheet piles -with a total length of 280 meters- was installed 2 meters in front of the old quay wall. The void space was filled with sand. In fact this was land reclamation.

Challenges

The project involved many technical, logistic, workplace on water and HSE (Health, Safety, Environmental) challenges. The work has to be done from the waterside utilizing a barge. All the equipment and materials had to be transported over water to the designated area. The traditional technology of water-jetting and impact hammers is not allowed in this vibration-sensitive area due to safety regulations for the local refinery.

The installation method with a Variable Moment Vibro Hammer was the appropriate solution. With the technical support of Dieseko Group engineers, Pertamina trusted their local contractor P.T. Bima Karya Kaloka, to carry out this renovation job.

Working under the bridge

The work under the bridge was under the supervision of Mr Djoko Susilo; together with Dieseko, an intelligent plan was devised also to install the sheet piles under the low bridge according to the strict safety rules (see illustration). The solution required a specific permit from Pertamina. In addition to this, gas measurements were necessary before executing the project. Medical check-ups and green passes were required for all personnel due to the Covid-pandemic during this project.

Working on the River

The project was strongly influenced by the tides of the river and the sea, the difference in water level up to 120cm. The time window to carry out the work follows the time schedule of the tides. Working days were limited to 4 pm and working on weekends was not allowed.

Finally, after 90 days, the work was completed to Pertamina Cilacap’s satisfaction. No accidents were reported and without any violation of safety, health and environmental regulations.
